Billed as one of the top 100 tours in the world, the Bruny Island Cruise lived up to it's hype. It's just a 3 hour cruise... no Gilligan, but the guide was a crack up as well as very knowledgeable. We had hoped to see an albatross for the first time, and were not disappointed.... we saw several. We also saw fur seals, a sea eagle, and cormorants... and sundry other birds. The highlight really was the boat ride itself... a fast, agile boat that seated about 25 people... seat belts required! We raced along the rocky shoreline, through magnificent stone outcroppings... and briefly out into the Southern Ocean, another first for Jan and I.
We drove from Hobart to Kettering where we took the car over to Bruny Island on a ferry. Then drove across the island, stopping along the way at a Fairy Penguin colony. Fairy Penguins are the world's smallest penguins, reaching a size of only 10 inches. Factoid: Penguins sleep only 4 minutes at a time.
Then walked along a beautiful beach to get to the boat docks...
And we were off...
Cormorants...
Sea Eagle...
Albatrosses...
Seals...
The Southern Ocean...
And, after the cruise, on the way back to the ferry, we saw our first Wallaby. We were trying to see the famed White Wallaby's found on Bruny Island, but had to settle for this one...
